How soon before my flight should I arrive at the airport?

If you are departing on a domestic flight, we recommend customers arrive 2 hours prior to your departure. For international destinations, we recommend arriving 3 hours prior to departure. 

What time does the airport open?

Dulles International is open 24/hours a day, 7 days a week. 

Ground Transportation

Where are the Rental Car Facilities?

All rental car companies are located on the airport. Free shuttle buses take customers between the rental lot and the Main Terminal.

From the Main Terminal baggage claim level, at Doors 2, 4, or 6, exit down the ramp toward the Ground Transportation Curb. Rental car shuttle buses are operated by each individual company.

What Metro Rail trains take me to/from Dulles International?

Dulles International offers direct service to Metro's Silver Line via the Silver Line Express Bus.  The Silver Line Express Bus departs from the Arrivals level of the Main Terminal, Door 4. Proceed up the ramp where you may purchase tickets at the counter. 

Where Can I Pick Up A Taxi?

Washington Flyer Taxicabs serve Dulles International exclusively with 24-hour service to and from the Airport. Customers may pick up taxis on the lower level of the Main Terminal outside of Doors 2 or 6. Signs inside the terminal will direct you down the ramp and outside from the baggage claim level to the taxi queues. 

Where can I get an Uber or Lyft Pick-up?

Authorized Uber and Lyft drivers may pick up their customers at Dulles International. Customers can access services from their smartphone and coordinate directly with their driver for pickup location.

Do you have Shared Van Service?

We are proud to offer door-to-door service operated by Super Shuttle and Supreme to/from Washington Dulles International Airport to the Washington, D.C. Metro Area, Virginia and Maryland. Shared Van counters are located on the lower level of the Main Terminal, down the ramp towards Door 2 and Door 6. Explore our Shared-Ride Van services.

Connecting Flight Information

I need information on how to get to my connecting gate

Step by step directions for our customers navigating connections may be found using our Virtual Navigation System.  Should you require any assistance in getting to your gate, we have Travelers Aid Volunteers who staff information desks throughout the airport. Please visit any of the numerous kiosks for information regarding flight statuses, gate locations, or other service information. 

Will I have enough time to make my connecting flight?

We recommend customers contact their airline regarding connections between flights. Please refer to our full list of airlines and their contacts for connection information.

General Information

I have a long layover at Dulles. What’s there to do?

Be sure to take full advantage of all of our shopping and dining options. We also offer a number of other amenities including Nursing Rooms, Interfaith Chapels, Charging Station and Pet Relief Areas. Check out our full list of services and amenities! 

Is there a place where I can store my luggage?

Due to TSA Security regulations, Dulles International currently does not have a designated storage area for luggage. Please contact your airline to see if they will accept your checked baggage earlier than normal. 

Do you have a Nursing Room?

Can I meet or escort someone to/from their gate?

Due to TSA Security Regulations, escorting someone to/from gates is prohibited unless authorized in cooperation with the airline in advance. Customers should contact their airline regarding information for the issuance of a gate pass. 

Is there a Kids Play Area?

Dulles is pleased to offer a play area for kids near Gate B70.  The "FunWay" is a great way for kids to unwind before, or after, their flight!  Complete with airplane-themed play elements to climb on and to slide down, the FunWay also has an interactive game system with over 100 games. International Arrivals

How long does it take to clear U.S. Customs?

Customers are transported to our U.S. Customs facilities within 10-15 minutes after deplaning.  Processing times may vary and customers can expect longer processing times during peak travel periods.  Most customers completed the process in less than an hour.

Where is U.S. Customs located?

US Customs is located on the lower level of the Main Terminal, adjacent to Baggage Claim #14. There is an Information Desk staffed by Travelers Aid who can provide flight arrival information located near the exit of the arrivals hall where you may greet passengers.

I am making a connection from my international flight.

Connections from international flights vary by airline. We have two separate facilities to process passengers arriving from international points of origin who may be connecting to another flight. Read more information specific to the nature of your connection.

Pets

Where do I pick up pets?

Be sure to check with your airline on where you can pick up pets.  Most pets, checked as baggage, will be hand delivered to you in the baggage claim area.  Pets traveling as cargo can be claimed at the airlines cargo facility.  If this is the case, please contact your airline for assistance.

Are pets allowed in the airport?

Generally, pets such as dogs are permitted in the airport while on leash. If you plan to travel with pets, we recommend customers contact their airline for information on pet policies. Additionally, TSA and the US Department of Agriculture have regulations about pet travel which you may review before your trip.

Do you have pet relief areas in the airport?

Dulles International features designated pet relief areas throughout the Airport, with two areas beyond security for customers traveling with service animals or pets.  Relief Areas are clearly marked, and contain waste bags and receptacles for your convenience.

Wheelchair Information

TSA/Security Checkpoint

What items are prohibited coming through the checkpoint?

Customers can visit the TSA general information page for a searchable list of items prohibited through security checkpoints.

What time does the security checkpoint open?

Hours of operation vary depending on the checkpoint locations, listed below:

  • East Checkpoint 4:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.
  • West Checkpoint 3:45 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.
  • TSA Pre✓™ 4:30 a.m. - 9:00 p.m.
  • During overnight periods, when the East and West checkpoints are closed, customers should use screening lanes next to TSA Pre✓™, located mid-way between the East and West checkpoint entrances.

What travel documents can I use to get through security?

Proper photo identification is required to enter the TSA checkpoint.  Please refer to the complete list of accepted travel documents for more information. 

Can I bring liquids through the security checkpoints?

Passengers are allowed to bring a quart-sized clear bag of liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes. These items are limited to travel-sized containers that are 3.4 ounces or less per item.

TSA Precheck is an expedited screening program providing those who register with designated lanes to clear security.

To whom should I report items missing from my baggage?

Please contact your airline directly regarding your missing item. Claims for missing items may also be filed with the TSA which is responsible for the screening of passengers and baggage at all U.S. airports.

What is CLEAR?

CLEAR is a registered traveler program that allows members to bypass the traditional document check at the security checkpoint. Customers visit a CLEAR kiosk located in a dedicated lane at the TSA Precheck Security Checkpoint. At the kiosk, customers scan their boarding pass and provide a biometric scan of their finger or eye to instantly verify their identity. After verification, a CLEAR representative will escort the customer into the screening area. Where are the CLEAR member kiosks?

CLEAR has kiosks at located at the TSA Precheck Checkpoint in the center of the Main Terminal (behind District Chop House). Look for the CLEAR logo or Representative. The CLEAR member kiosks are available to customers when the security checkpoints are open (5:00am – 8:00pm).

Is there a benefit to having both CLEAR and TSA PreCheck?

CLEAR Customers who are also enrolled in TSA PreCheck have the added benefit of directly entering the PreCheck screening lane after their CLEAR identity verification. TSA PreCheck offers expedited screening, for additional time savings.

How do I enroll in CLEAR?

Dulles International has enrollment kiosks located near each of the security checkpoints and are open during the same operating hours as the checkpoint (5:00 am-8:00 pm). The sign-up process takes just a few minutes. Once enrolled, CLEAR can be used immediately. You can also enroll online at https://clearme.com/. Membership fees apply.

How do I enroll in TSA PreCheck?

You can apply for TSA PreCheck at Dulles International Airport.  The office is located adjacent to the East Security Checkpoint Entrance and is open daily.  Walk ins are accepted, however, appointments are given priority.  You can also begin your application online at https://universalenroll.dhs.gov/programs/precheck
